issue one
"My God, you really are the World's Greatest Detective. How did you know all that?"
-- Hal Jordan, Green Lantern
Great issue full of great moments.
How can it miss?
Mark waid writing and the legendary George Perez doing the art.
And a story which mixes two of my three favorite heroes, adventure, action, some mystery, and Hal with Bruce in Las Vegas.
It starts when Hal discovers a fresh corpse floating in space, dead from a gunshot wound, and Hal's ring confirms there haven't been any entrys or exits in that zone since Hal flew through the day before. A sci fi version of the murder victim in the locked room wih no way in or out. But that's just the beginning...
Turns out there have been at least sixty-two other corpses, exactly identical to the one Hal found with identical wounds, found around the world.
After comparing notes in the Batcave, Hal and Bats are attacked by a yellow energy being, which our heroes dispatch with relative ease. In this sequence, we see Batman doing Robin's lines from the classic Batman tv series: "Batteries to power, turbines to speed!" Nice touch. We also learn that Batman never saw "Jurassic Park".
One of the best sequences in this issue is when Hal and Bruce go to the Kismet Casino in Las Vegas, looking for leads to who is behind the multiple murders. The banter between the two is perfect, and seeing Bruce first amused by Hal's discomfort and then amazed at his reckless gambling was excellent. Later, they break into a suite at the casino and discover a link between the victim(s) and the villain Roulette. Shortly after, the heroes discover Roulette and rescue her from some other attacking aliens. Hal pursues one of the aliens to the planet Ventura, while Batman stays behind to help Roulette. Once she is revived with oxygen, she frantically warns Batman of the Book of Destiny, whose possessor will have ultimate knowledge...and ultimate power!
Fantastic first issue, and I didn't even touch on everything. I have been eagerly anticipating this title's return, and it did not disappoint. In fact, i think it may have exceeded my expectations.

issue two
Picking up from last issue, this is a fun, humorous, action-packed book, and it’s humorous in a way that draws from the character and that is actually purposeful and entertaining. And surprises appear at regular intervals, not as upsetting shocks of violence, but as clever bits of misdirection, perfect for a story taking place on a planet ruled by the Lords of Luck.
Artistically, George Perez is in fine form here as well. His cover brilliantly features Green Lantern and Supergirl amidst a busy mishmash of visuals. Inside, he makes Kara sexy without being inappropriate, and she and Hal make a charming team as they infiltrate a world specially designed to keep away people such as them.
Inside, writer Mark Waid has some fun with Kara’s immaturity and Hal’s experience. Surrounded by Hal’s green glow, she flirts mercilessly until he reminds her (and himself) of her age, then picks up an idea from him about going undercover to smoke out their prey who thinks he has every contingency covered with his magic book.
There are battles, there are crowds, there are chases, there are the high-tech glowing holograms that seem to characterize this science fiction type of story, and Waid also finds time to hint about the next issue which will shift focus to Batman and Blue Beetle. This is excellent, enjoyable comicbook storytelling by masters of the field. The way things are looking already, this title will be a favorite on nearly everyone's list... |

you've got to wonder just how Perez can actually be bothered with all the details he crams into each frame
The level of detail is unbelievable.
As for Hal and Kara, he seems to have a bit of a short memory, remember arisa from the corps?
she was just a kid but it didn't stop him |

i was thinking that as well.....
I went ahead and added this to my pull list before it even came out. With Waid and Perez onboard, I knew it was gonna rock. And it does. |

| The latest issue I own, the one with Flash and Doom Patrol, was pretty damn good. Did anyone else catch that one? |

| I just finished up 8 & 9. I'm thinking this title might be going the way of the chopping block. The last few issues were "ok", but not anything spectacular. I think this will be one that I'll pick up based on the cover or thumbing through it on the shelf. |

| It started off pretty good but the last few issues have been a bit doubtful. Not really sure about this title at the moment. |

It pulled away from having Batman as one half of the lead, whic I personally don't mind. The only problem with this couse of action is that the casual reader will take one look at The Chalengers of the Unknown and think "...who are they?"etc. and put the book down.
George Perez's artwork means that you realy have to pay close attention to the art, not a bad thing, but anyone just looking, will think it's a bit cluttered and put it down.
I'm enjoying it, but I like obscure references to old characters, not everyone does, and that maybe all it takes to see this book shelved |

issue 28
Haven't bought an issue in ages, but when I saw the cover to THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD 28, I couldn't resist. Beautiful. And the story, which features a time-displaced Barry Allen/Flash teaming with Blackhawk is a real gem, too. Fun with a serious message to it. J. Michael Straczynski blends a whimsical time-travel tale w...ith a serious side to WWII perfectly, even placing Barry in a moral dilemma: super-heroes do not kill, but what about a man whose country is at war? The event sending Flash backward in time is logical, and the broken leg that keeps him there also makes sense. It is a fun Silver Age plot with Modern Age sensibilities mixed in, and it works very nicely to me. The art, by Jesus Saiz is great, really giving the story that extra old-time feel. I am curious: when did Barry adopt Wally's blank-eye mask design? No big deal, just wondering. This excellent issue will have me checking back next month to see what team up they serve us next. |

issue 29

This month in THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD 29 features a team-up I never thought I would see: Batman and Brother Power, The Geek. I never read anything with the Geek in it, but remember seeing him here and there, now and then over the years in various comics shops I was in. This story by J. Michael Straczynski is really quite good. It acknowledges Geek as a character from the sixties, as in real life, and ties him to early memories of Bruce Wayne and the horror movies he watched as a kid. The tone this issue is very sentimental, recalling Bruce's youth, days from my past, and Geek's memories of the turbulant era from over three decades ago. What's more, it makes an interesting comparison between that era and today, how the world has grown colder, more violent, and we as a people are more isolated. While it is not quite that simple, there is a valid point in that comparison. All of this is presented in quite an interesting story, where Batman is attempting to catch the person setting businesses on fire. The artwork, as with last issue, is quite beautiful and rendered by the talented Jesus Saiz. I really love this title again! |

issue 30
What a fantastic book this revived series has become, and BRAVE AND THE BOLD 30 has certainly reinforced that opinion. This issue brings together Hal Jordan and the Kent Nelson Doctor Fate as Hal finds himself near death, his ring power nearly gone, hunted by countless aliens who poisoned him, and nowhere near an inhabitable planet. His only hope might be his old friend Doctor Fate, but to save Hal might require the ultimate sacrifice. My enjoyment didn't just come from Hal's almost foolish bravery in the face of certain death. It was Kent Nelson and his visit from the past; his boyish curiousity regarding what his future held, his reaction to finding out his less-than-blissful future, and the choice he makes to help a friend. This was an exceptionally moving story that really put a lump in my throat and makes me wish Kent Nelson would somehow return and wear the blue and gold uniform again. Bravo, J. Michael Straczynski for yet another incredible read this month, and thanks also to the talented Jesus Saiz for the incredible visuals to accompany this emotional tale. |

issue 31
This title consistantly provides great team-ups and high-quality stories, and in THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD 31 we have the most unique "team-up" seen in a very long time: The Atom and The Joker. This issue, doctors call in The Atom to go inside Joker's brain - to save the maniac's life! I love Atom's reaction: "But it's the Joker!" Being a hero, Atom shrinks down and goes inside the killer clown's brain, where he experiences moments that formed Joker's twisted life. This is the closest thing to an actual Joker origin story we may EVER see. This was a unique, twisted, funny and refreshing story from a series really putting out great stories and pairings month after month. "Joker-boogers." Lol. |
