Justice League: New Frontier (2008) In the 1950s, a new generation of superheroes must join forces with the community's active veterans and a hostile US government to fight a menace to Earth. Finally saw this; it lived up to my expectations. Great job all around, I will have to read the graphic novel...

Dr. Bell and Mr. Doyle (2000) A young Arthur Conan Doyle meets Dr. Bell, the man who would inspire Sherlock Holmes. This is a murder mystery that also allows the viewer to see just how a real professor in Doyle's life would influence him and inspire the creation and style of his master detective. This film does well in making Bell's and Holmes'personalities quite distinct. I enjoyed this film.

The Promotion (2008) Two assistant managers of a corporate grocery store vie for a coveted promotion. This is one very funny movie that will do for working at a grocery store what Office Space did for working in an office. It has a very similar humor as Office Space and I really found it very amusing.

twilight (2008) A teenage girl risks everything when she falls in love with a vampire. I probably would have rented this when it came out on dvd, but a friend invited me to a free showing, and how can I pass up a free movie? Though it labors much on the romance of lead characters Bella and Edward, that is the whole point. That he is a vampire adds intrigue, and there are some really good action sequences in here, too. It really is a very good film with a very interesting story to tell, nice acting, and very nice camera work. There is definitely a sequel or three coming from this...

Fresh (1994) Michael (or Fresh as he's known) is a 12-year-old drug runner who lives in a crowded house with his cousins and aunt. When he sees friends gunned down by one of his boss' thugs, he plans revenge using chess techniques his father taught him. I really enjoyed this story and even though he works in the drug business as a runner, I understood his reasons and enjoyed his brilliant and daring strategy. Good film.

Get Smart (2008) Remake of the classic television show. Steve Carrell was good casting as Maxwell Smart, Anne Hathaway was okay as 99. She didn't carry the role like Barbara Feldon. Carrell pulled it off by not trying to do it like Don Adams. No one could anyway. It was funny - quite funny at times - and Smart was given an extra dimension here by making him a more sympathetic character. The writer had the smarts to not try and just copy the show, but to also give it its own voice. Very, very (wait for it) smart...

Night of the Demons (1988) On the night of Halloween, a bunch of teens decide to go to a party at an abandoned funeral parlor. Predictable, cheesy and rather dull. If it has violent death and bare breasts in it and it is dull, then it really must be bad...

Cheerleader Camp (1987) An killer is knocking off the members of a small cheerleader group at a remote cheerleader training camp. This one is Porky's Meets Friday the 13th; typical cheap, cheesy 80's teen flick. Pretty faces don't make no pretty film, and now I won't get that hour or so back again. I do not know what I was thinking when I placed this one in my Blockbuster queue - must've been in a bad mood...

Australia Nicole Kidman stars as Lady Ashley, who travels from England to Australia to find out why her husband has been spending all his time at a cattle ranch. Once there, she finds her husband has just been killed, and she's now in charge. She hires the Drover (Hugh Jackman) to drive her cattle to market. Meantime, Mrs. Ashley has befriended a young mixed-race (Aboriginal-White) child, who she ends up protecting from the authorities who want to send the child to a mission school.

The second half of the film, which feels a bit tacked on, concerns the Japanese attack of Darwin in 1941, just after Pearl Harbor and how it affects the major characters.

The film, thus feels like two different films. The first, which concerns the cattle drive and saving the ranch. The second film features the same characters and is about the Japanese attack. The first succeeds wonderfully, the second less so. Jackman is okay as the Drover, Kidman's a bit more so-so as Lady Ashley. Really good, however, are the Aboriginal actors, Brandon Walters as the young boy Nullah and David Gulpilil as his Aboriginal grandfather King George. Also quite good was David Wenham (Faramir in LOTR) as Fletcher, the main bad guy in the film.

Overall, I enjoyed the film. I'd probably give it 3 stars out of 4.

X-Files: I Want To Believe (2008) As good as the best of episodes, this was a fun, entertaining chapter in the complicated lives of former agents Mulder and Scully and the world of Chris Carter they live in. Very well done, and leaves me wanting more...

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) Very entertaining sequel. I know it received bad press, but I thought it was quite whimsical and clever at times. Loved the discussion Hellboy and Abe have about women over some beers and listening to Barry Manilow. Pretty darn good.

Crazed Fruit Kurutta kajitsu (1956) Japanese film about two young men, spending their summer on an exotic beach, fall for the same beautiful girl, whose charm and looks may hide more than they they bargained for. Very noirish style of directing and wonderful cinematography add volumes to a great cast telling a story of jealousy, desire and vengeance. This is a must-see for anyone who enjoys being pulled into a film and experiencing the events inside.

Wanted (2008) I have never read the comic it is based on, so I don't know how it compares to the source material. But I thought it was pretty decent. Nothing really unique, but nice action stunts and some good lines here and there.

Baby Mama (2008) A successful, single business woman who dreams of having a baby discovers she is infertile and hires a working class woman to be her unlikely surrogate. Not outstanding, but still pretty funny. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler make a good comedy team, they have great chemistry.

The Spirit (2008) Just got home from seeing this one and...wow. It's amazing. As most of us expected, a lot of the feel of 'Sin City'; often visually stunning, creative, mesmerizing...and I didn't even get to Eva Mendez and her body. I definitely see where it will alienate viewers who go for the same old same old. But I loved it!

The Milagro Beanfield War (1988) A farmer deverts water from a resort site and ignites a battle between local townsfolk who will wind up beingdisplaced, and the rich developer and his team. Directed by Robert Redford, this was an interesting story of the little guy battling the bad giant. Nicely done, but not overly compelling.

Deception (2008) An accountant is introduced to a mysterious sex club known as The List by his lawyer friend. But in this new world, he soon becomes the prime suspect in a woman's disappearance and a multi-million dollar heist. Decent enough, but there will be no second viewing, and the "payoff" at the end felt weak.

I'm Dancing As Fast As I Can (1982) True story abouta successful producer who fights addiction to valium. Jill Clayburgh is terrific in this, but I still found myself distracted by this very depressing story.

Smoke Signals (1998) Predominantly featuring Native American actors, this drama/comedy follows a young man's journey to learn more about the father who abandoned him. Well written and acted, this was quite an involving story that hit its mark nicely.

Fool's Gold (2008) A new clue to the whereabouts of a lost treasure rekindles a married couple's sense of adventure -- and their estranged romance. Funny, great stunts and special effects, good story equals a pretty good movie. Still, it is a "one-viewing" movie...

Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity (2002) Twelve-year-old Mindy Ho inexpertly tries Taoist magic to fix her single mother's financial situation and seemingly hopeless romantic prospects. Amusing, good, touching tale that held my interest from start to finish. And I love Sandra Oh...

Death Race (2008) Ex-con Jensen Ames is forced by the warden of a notorious prison to compete in a car race in which inmates must brutalize and kill one another on the road to freedom. Despite Jason Statham this movie was actually rather dull.

Hustle (1975) Burt Reynolds plays Phil Gaines, a bitter, cynical cop who investigates the case of a stripper/porn actress found dead on the beach. Good film, good story, good acting. Reynolds does a decent job in this one, makes one almost forget Smokey and the Bandit...

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) Devastated Peter takes a Hawaii vacation in order to deal with recent break-up with his TV star girlfriend, Sarah Marshall. Little does he know Sarah's traveling to the same resort...and she's bringing along her new boyfriend. Quite funny a lot of the time, very weird as well. Enjoyable.

88 Minutes (2007) Jack Gramm has only 88 minutes to find out who is after him - and how - to prevent his death. Intriguing idea, and getting Al Pacino was a coup, but it still kinda falls a bit flat. Chalk it up to good idea and poor execution...

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008) High school student Nick O'Leary meets college-bound Norah Silverberg while he is moping over his break up with his girlfriend. Funny, unique, angst-filled movie that captures some of the heartache and hopefulness of young adulthood. Very nicely done.

It Runs In The Family (1994) Essentially, this film is about a dysfunctional family and three generations of men. It is often touching, sometimes funny, sometimes sad. Pretty good.

Across the Universe(2007) Story set in the 60's, filled with great Beatles tunes. Sometimes corny, a touch melodramatic, but all fun. I enjoyed the different versions of the classic tunes, and this movie.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Okay the good first Hugh Jackman is excellent as Wolverine as he has been in every X movie, Liev Schreiber is great as Sabertooth, Ryan Reynolds is good as Deadpool(mostly), Will.I.Am is unexpectedly great as Wraith (down to his cowboy hat Very Happy ). Overall the cast did an excellent job. The script itself was decent but no better than the first X-men. Now the bad i liked 90% of this movie but let's face it almost every adaption of a comic to the big screen has changes that the hardcore fans are gonna hate. I liked it and may even see it again.

Nothing But a Man (1964) A devil-may-care young man is drawn to a grounded young woman, but he may not be ready to give up his ways for stability with her. Great story with talented cast, with segregation in the American South as backdrop. An incredible film experience for anyone who enjoys a well-written story and believes in the equality of every human being.

Nothing In Common (1986) Tom Hanks plays a successful ad man who must juggle his ever-demanding career while his parents' marriage breaks up. Jackie Gleason, in his final film performance, gives an Oscar-worthy performance, and Sela Ward is hot as always.

Star Trek (2009) FINALLY! It really pulls it off and produces excitement at the possibility of seeing the original (and best) crew in Starfleet in new and exciting stories. Everyone put in great performances and seeing Leonard in the ears again really eased the transition from original cast to the new one. Great, great job!

Last Chance Harvey (2008) In London for his daughter's wedding, a rumpled man finds his romantic spirits lifted by a new woman in his life. I only saw this because of Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. They made this a worthwhile viewing.

Milk (2008) The story of Harvey Milk, and his struggles as an American gay activist who fought for gay rights and became California's first openly gay elected official. My friend really liked this film and she strongly recommended it to me, so I finally watched it. Excellent performances from entire cast. A well-told, true, tragic story.

Something Weird (1967) A man has his face horribly disfigured in an electrical accident, but gains e.s.p. He meets a gorgeous woman who promises she will restore his looks if he becomes her lover. Unfortunately, his sixth sense reveals she is actually a hideous woman. This is a classic film by H.G. Lewis, and it only gets weirder, including a bizarre acid trip sequence. The acting is horrible and the budget makes a Roger Corman film seem like a big budget blockbuster. Recommended.

He's Just Not That Into You (2009) The Baltimore-set movie of interconnecting story arcs deals with the challenges of reading or misreading human behavior...or it's about dating and relationships. It is a decent movie with a decent story with decent performances from mostly decent actors. Overall, a decent film.

Fired Up! (2009) Two high school boys join a cheerleader camp to meet girls. Felt like seeing a mindless movie with lots of girls. The humor was fairly decent, but don't look for any hidden meaning - what you see is what you get.
