This has a very fresh concept, and I could get in on the ground floor.

From Comic Book Resources:

Written and drawn by "Invincible" creators Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker with covers by Jason Pearson, "Destroyer" #1 goes on sale in April.

DESTROYER #1 (of 5)
Written by ROBERT KIRKMAN
Penciled by CORY WALKER
Cover by JASON PEARSON

"DESTROYER," PART I

For sixty years, Keen Marlowe has been a super hero, taking down bad guys, fighting the good fight. But it's is about to come crashing to an end. See, Marlowe is dying -- maybe today, maybe tomorrow, the only question is when. But Marlowe isn't about to go quietly into the night. Before he goes, he intends to leave the world a safer place for his family. And if that means hunting down -- and murdering -- every super-villain he can, so be it. They don't call him "Destroyer" for nothing.

Glad to see Kirkman and Walker reunite.

I'm excited for it, and I'm glad its already written so Kirkman can focus on getting his Image books out on time like he promised.

issue one

"Destroyer: Chapter One"
Written by Robert Kirkman
Art by Cory Walker

When I saw the solicits for this, especially after seeing the pages with the great artwork, I knew I had to get this book.
I really am enjoying Robert Kirkman's book Invincible, and also enjoyed the issue of Astounding Wolf-Man I've read - he really has that ability to get you to care for a character and pull you into the story. Here Kirkman does it again and gives us an intriguing concept: an over-the-hill super-hero near the end of his life trying to get his affairs in order before he dies.
This first issue begins quite violently with Destroyer thwarting a terrorist attack, and later with his learning of his limited time left, which sends him on a violent path to the end.
The issue has a fast-paced story that is quick to draw readers in to the story and ends with a bang. If you are a fan of any of Kirkman's other works, then you will not be disappointed with this new series. He pulls off his character development through interaction and conversations, allowing the development to come naturally in the story.
I also enjoyed little nuances, like Keene's wife Harriet with her sophisticated replacement arm, or his doctor with his equally sophisticated device on his head. This is made all the more realistic and interesting from the incredible artwork.
Speaking of which, Cory Walker's art is also a nice contribution to the story, adding a level of simple line detail that gives the action scenes a gritty feeling. He shifts well from those big, violent action scenes to small character moments, such as the conversations between Keene and his wife, Harriet. Terrific work there.
As the book ends, we see Keene starting off his final acts by a visit with a super-criminal in jail. I was a bit puzzled by the reaction from the warden, but I get that this is set somewhere off in the future, and that this might be a commentary as well on what it might hold for the attitude towards any human life, criminal especially.
I really enjoyed this book as much as I figured I would, and eagerly look to the next four chapters of this story.

issue two (of five)

"Destroyer: Chapter Two"
Robert Kirkman - story
Cory Walker - art

Destroyer's crusade to rid the world of serious threats before he dies continues this month.
Kirkman clearly has the ability to take a brilliant concept such as this and actually produce a successful execution of it. Many a great idea has drawn me to a book with great anticipation, only to fall flat and let me down again.
Not this book.
Kirkman gives this story very fine depth, making Keene and his friends and family truly four dimensional, even sympathetic. The guy is dying, and he is only killing bad guys after all. And he is a loving husband and father, and this issue we also meet his friends Darius and Felecia. Your everyday, average Joe with great powers who is essentially protecting his family for when he is no longer around and able to.
His main focus this issue falls on what sounds to be a major bad-ass called The Scar. We have already seen Destroyer take down some pretty tough bad guys already, so this Scar looks to be a major challenge. This belief is supported as Darius' wife Felecia is kidnapped by some of Scars' men as a way to strike back at Destroyer.
As the issue ends, Darius suits up as a super hero named Turret, apparently a one-time partner to Keene's Destroyer, to rescue Felecia and take down The Scar.
Bolstering this enjoyable story is the beautiful art of Cory Walker, whose every panel is a pure pleasure to look at. He strikes that perfect balance between realism and cartoony, giving it that crisp, clean imagery that really enhances the story. I really love it.
