This is a review of Veronica #185, "Riverdale High: The Musical."
This is an obvious play on Disney’s "High School Musical" and gives us Archie fans our own version in “Riverdale High: The Musical.”
The story begins when the world famous movie writer and director Jennifer Sparks (who also happens to be a graduate of Riverdale High) announces she’s going to film a movie at the school, Veronica sees it as her chance to shine. But when the proposed musical's plot seems to parallel her own life, our heroine decides she wants an even bigger role. I would've figured she would want that anyways, but that's how it works here. “Riverdale High: The Musical” is a story that will remain timeless and undated. There will always be musicals, long after this issue grows old. I noticed some current pop references such as “Sisterhood of the Traveling Halter Top”, “Hillary Dudd” and "The Princess Blog", but you don't need to be familiar with any of that to enjoy the story. This will also not make it difficult for future generations to enjoy it either. This issue was very enjoyable to read and it has some very nice moments. Veronica is, well, Veronica as she is her normal vain and rude self here. But readers also get a chance this issue to see where some of those traits come from. There’s also a great moment involving Archie and Mr. Lodge, where we get to see Mr. Lodge’s reaction to Archie’s "in high school…you were just like me!” The ending has a clever commentary on movies and comic book story arcs.
As a female, I think I may enjoy this book a bit more, but I don't want to say it is gender exclusive. Guys may also enjoy this title and this issue, provided you are an Archie Comics fan!

Nice review. I love Archie comics, yet haven't bought one in eons. I do plan to change that once my economic siyuation improves. I agree that Veronica may not be gender exclusive, but I prefer the books featuring Archie and Jughead, even Betty, or Betty with Veronica. But I never thought of getting solo Veronica, she is soooo unlikable...

Five-part "Freshman Year" running through Archie titles.

From Comics Continuum:

Archie Comics on Monday announced "Freshman Year," a five-part story that launches in Archie #587 in July.

Here's how Archie describes the story:

"Travel back in time with this five-issue tale that takes Archie and his friends back to their very first year in high school. It all starts with this poignant prologue which finds the gang wondering just what that first year will be like, while reflecting fondly on the past as well. Along the way, the gang must deal with the pending departure of one of their closest friends, as well as their bickering parents. And while the kids count the days until they enter their new school home, someone else is joining Riverdale High, too: Principal Waldo Weatherbee! All this, plus allusions to Captain Pureheart, The Man from R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E., Veronica's worldwide travels, and more!"

Archie #587 is written by Batton Lash, with art by Bill Galvan.

Archie Comics.com Wednesday morning unveiled a new Archie Comics logo that will appear on all of its comic books, digest/double digests and graphic novels.

The new logo will make its first appearance on the Archie Comic publications scheduled for the newsstand on-sale next week, with Veronica #190 and Archie Digest #247.

TThe new trade dress for all of the Archie Digest Library books include new logos for most of the titles as well as secondary logos for popular characters featured in the digests. Characters such as Little Archie, Cheryl Blossom, Reggie, Josie & the Pussycats are featured in the digests every month, but not necessarily on the cover.

I found this on a blog called 20th Century Danny Boy:

Norm Breyfogle will draw Archie and the gang, in his own style, for a series of stories for the Archie new look title.

I especially like the Jughead drawings.
As I understand things now, the New Look Archie series will have various artists render Archie and the gang in their own, more realistic style. This is a brilliant move. Archie continues to amaze me with their fresh ideas and concepts to draw in new readers. I will definately be picking up the Breyfogle issues.
Who could be next?
Richard Corben? Gary Frank? Alex Ross?

Archie 600

Enjoying the latest Archie big event in ARCHIE 600 - Archie Marries Veronica. Set about five years in Riverdale's future, Archie decides to settle down with Veronica. The story is whimsical with nice little pieces of Archie history sprinkled throughout. It's fun, a sentimental read, and it keeps Archie - and comics in general - in the news. One negative point: poor Betty...

issue 603

The big Archie event continues in ARCHIE 603, as this issue now presents the other side of the coin: Archie marries Betty. Different events lead Archie Andrews to pop the question to the girl who has been pining away for our hero for nearly seventy years. It was interesting to see that evenin this story, Archie seemed poised to propose to Veronica, but her rudeness changed that course. So Betty gets asked, and we see the graduation celebration change into an engagement celebration. The only thing that bothers me is that Archie apparently gives the ring he bought for Veronica to Betty. I know he has limited funds, but it still seems wrong. Otherwise, the story is quite whimsical and fun, with dialogue throwing in many of the Archie series titles throughout the issue. This is a fun and interesting flip to the last three issues, and I look forward to the next two chapters of this story.
